I was born in Warsaw, Poland in December of 1975. In 1980, while on vacation in Canada, the Solidarity strikes began. On advice from friends, my mother decided that it wouldn't be a good idea to return from the West. Instead we headed south to the United States. We started in San Diego; then made our way to Chicago; before finally settling in New York State; and eventually New York City. As with many immigrant families, we kept talking about eventually returning to the 'motherland'. My father eventually also immigrated to the US. My parents got married. My brother was born. My brother started school. Brother didn't speak any Polish, so the decision was finally made to stay. I started elementary school in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. While living there our apartment was broken into not once, but twice. The second time my mother actually saw the thieves on the fire escape. On advisement of the police, we moved out of Greenpoint to Flushing, Queens. There I continued school at P.S. 32 and then I.S. 25. Much to the surprise of my ASSHOLE assistant principle, I managed to get into Brooklyn Technical High School. To this day, I consider my time at Tech to be the most influential of my life. It’s the only educational institution I attended that I give money to.
I started college at the University of Miami as Biology/Marine Science Major. It took all of half a semester to realize that I hated Biology and I hated Miami. I was willing to admit the mistake of major however I was to proud to acknowledge the mistake of attending the wrong college. My time in Miami was a long hard lesson on survival and the real world.
Ten months after graduation, I moved from Miami to Washington, DC. Although it took me a little time to settle in, I started to discover who I am while living in DC. I have very fond memories of my times in Washington and the friends I’ve made. In May of 2005, I fulfilled a live long dream and relocated to Boulder, CO. Seven months into the experience, this has been one of the best decisions of my life. I wake up everyday looking forward to what adventure lie ahead.
